A New Era for Education: The Andela Story

The Andela Story
Andela is a global talent accelerator that recruit and train software developers and connects them with top employers. Andela finds the brightest young people in Africa and gives them the training and mentorship needed to thrive as full-time, remote developers for companies around the world. Backed by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, GV (Google Ventures) and Spark Capital, Andela is building the next generation of global technology leaders.

Overview

Andela, a Lagos and New York-based education startup has brought a brand new approach to education on the African continent.

Andela is built upon a self-funding model of education — instead of charging tuition, Andela enables developers to finance their own education through their work. As a result, attracts both working professionals and high-achieving college graduates.
Andela recruits intelligent, local talent through a rigorous testing and interview process and then pays each student approximately $500 each month, with benefits, at the start of a four year fellowship designed to transform even the least tech-inclined person into a world-class software developer or project manager.

What Andela does

A Scientific Approach to Building Engineering Teams. Andela builds high-performing engineering teams with the most talented developers from tech hubs across Africa.

1. EXTREME RECRUITING

50,000+ applicants.
Six week vetting process.
0.5% acceptance rate.

 2. (OVER) PREPARE
Welcome to the world’s first immersive simulations program for software developers.
Two weeks of shadowing doesn’t cut it. During six months of intensive simulations, we recreate every environment a developer might encounter — from agile best practices to being thrown into a project mid-cycle with a murky code base.

3. HASSLE-FREE HIRING
Here’s how we make hiring easy:
Evaluate: Our engineers evaluate your technical needs and build a team of Andela Developers with the right expertise.
Design: With a deep understanding of your code base and internal systems, we design an onboarding plan for your Andela team.
Onboard: Your dedicated onboarding specialist gets your Andela team up to speed on your code base and internal systems.
Integrate: We fly your developers out to your headquarters for at least two weeks of building rapport with the team in-person.

Developing and retaining engineers is our specialty. Let us manage talent so you can focus on growing your business.
Raw talent only gets you so far. We invest in the infrastructure that your Andela Developers need to be successful, from state-of-the-art office space to a team of senior engineers and advisors.

History

Andela was founded in May 2014 by a team of entrepreneurs which include: Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (currently Co-founder & Managing Director at Flutterwave), Jeremy Johnson (founder of now public 2U, American), Ian Carnevale (edtech entrpreneur, Canadian), Christina Sass (economic development expert, American), Brice Nkengsa (Blackberry and Pivotal Labs lead engineer, Cameroonian), and Nadayar Enegesi (Technology and Learning expert, Nigerian).

Andela launched on 1 September 2014, with six students selected from a developer boot camp, in the office building it currently occupies on Herbert Macaulay Road not far from the famed Co-Creation Hub, an incubator at the centre of Nigeria’s tech revolution.

When Andela raised $24 million in a funding round led by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, the media coverage of the funding sparked a controversy on Nigerian Tech Twitter about its founding narrative. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Andela’s co-founder set the record straight with a 5-minute read on his Medium page, How Andela was founded…..
